Newell Beach
Newell Beach is only one hour's drive north of the Cairns International Airport and Domestic flight terminals. On the drive up you will follow the winding coast road with some magnificent views out across the Coral Sea. Stop at the lookout at Rex’s point to take those unforgettable snap shots and there are places to pull of the road to take full advantage of our wonderful beaches. Then you will be travelling amongst rolling fields of sugar-cane and, if you are here during the crushing season from June to November, you will see harvesters and sugar trains hard at work.
Newell Beach is only a short drive from famous places such as Port Douglas, the crystal clear rock pools of Mossman Gorge National Park, Daintree Village and Rainforest, and the mighty Daintree River, home to the Estuarine Crocodile and giant Barramundi.
The beautiful beach at Newell looks across The Coral Sea to the laidback tourist holiday village of Port Douglas, (often visited by the rich and famous), Low Isles with it’s light-house shines like a gem in the sea, while nearby Snapper Island is a fisherman’s playground, as it sits shaped like a crocodile, just off Cape Kimberley and the mouth of the mighty Daintree River.
Newell Beach offers a selection of accommodation. There is a Caravan Park with shaded sites for the road traveller, on-site vans and fully self-contained units, and there are also absolute beachfront houses for rent.
The beach is 2.5 klm long - amble along the pristine clean sand taking in the view out to sea, or the majestic Great Dividing Range, which encircles as far as the eye can see. A must-see from our beach is a beautiful sunrise.
You can take a 3-minute drive into the sweet little sugar town of Mossman, which is the commercial centre of the shire. Locally-grown produce includes exotic tropical fruits, fresh vegetables, Daintree tea, coffee grown on the Atherton Tablelands and sugar from the Mossman Sugar Mill..
It's a great place to stay! Quiet and restful, no noisy hotels and you can fish from the beach. All recreational fishermen are catered for. There are boat ramps at the northern end of Newell Beach, at Saltwater Creek and another on the southern end at Mossman River, and each provides easy access for fishing in the estuaries - but remember that you must be Crocodile-wise at all times when near the waterways! There are reefs just off the beach, or you can head out to the nearby Islands, and The Great Barrier Reef, or take a short drive to the Daintree River and try to catch a famous North Queensland Barramundi, or just explore the wildlife in their natural habitats..
Newell Beach is only a couple of minutes from the Mossman Golf Club, or ten minutes from the Mossman Memorial Bowls Club. In Mossman you can also enjoy great dining at local restaurants, pubs, and clubs - come and meet the locals!
